I'm 55 years old and I do several centuries a year but besides taking Hammer Electrolyte capsules, drinking water, and using my homemade gel concoction (Honey and Black strap Molasses) I don't use any other supplements. I was thinking of pruchasing the Hammer Race Caps to add to my regimen not only when riding but on a daily basis. Anyone out there use these?
God Bless,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for posing your question. I took this supplement once years ago and I personally felt it never really had much of an impact on my performance. Having said that we're all individuals and it might help you. Fortunately, we get a significant enough discount from Hammer that trialing it once doesn't hurt the wallet :)
If you decide to pick up the bottle to give it a try I recommend you keep all other variables as constant as possible to better determine its efficacy.
James

Hello Michael I ride fast club rides, event rides, long fast enurance rides (100mi.) I have used cytomax and endurex to no effect and thought it was a waste of money. After joining IC3 I thought ok I'll try Hammer products. I use Hammer gels on short rides (2hrs) Perpetum (4hrs and up,) and Recoverite and Hammer whey. So I think everybody reacts differently and they may not help aka James, but it seems Hammer produts are most consistent to helping performance and recovery. I do think Hammer is a little over the top on there having a supplement for everything and it can be a bit overwhelming, but I think it is more a matter of choice and finding what works for you out of there line of products. Such as I used the electrolyte caps and did not notice any benifits, and I don't use the Heed because I don't care for the flavors I just use straight water. Your home made gel sounds like a great idea I would add the perpetum for the centuries and see how that works. Hammer has a great book “the Endurance Athlete's guide to success” and that really helped me figure out what best fit my riding such as eating a small breakfast before a big ride then use perpetum and for food/fuel that one tip really helped on a 160mi ride with 10,000 feet of climbing, I hardly ate any solid food and felt surprisinly good at the end. On a side note my Dad lives on Taylor street in SanJose when I visit I like to climb Mt Hamilton maybe we can go for a ride next time iam down there.
Pray hard,ride fast

John,
Thanks for the tips. BTW I do have that little red book so I bought some of those race caps, mito caps, and the enduralytes. The first two I take on a daily basis but only use the enduros for the century rides. As for the Perpetum I have some 1 serving packets which I may use this weekend. Finally, what a small world it is because Taylor street is just a couple of minutes away from my house and “Yes” I'd love to ride with you up Hamilton and myabe if the weather is good do the back side and stop at the Junction road house for a nice sandwich.
Take Care and God Bless,
Mike

I use Race Caps and Premium Insurance Caps during race season (May through August) and feel the they help me just a little bit. Noticeable, but not “superman”. I've used Race Day Boost for my “A” races and again, felt a click or two better, but not “superman”.
I use HEED for all racing and Perpetuem for long training rides that don't have a lot of intensity. I've gotten some stomach discomfort from Perpetuem in high intensity efforts. I also use the Gel for racing. I used to get stomach aches from Powerade, Gatorade, Power bars, and other energy drinks.
Endurolytes are for when you're going long and will be sweating. But 40mg of sodium is almost nothing. I cramped in a couple of long (5-8 hour) races before finally figuring out that I need 500mg of sodium per hour to avoid cramping. I started using the Fizz tablets and no more cramps.
Hope that helps!
